SAPERAVI

.

Hugh Hamilton McLaren Vale Odd Ball Saperavi 2005

($40; 13.5% alcohol; cork; 93 points)

The self-proclaimed black sheep of the Hamiltons rubs it in too deep with these Odd Ball claims; I presume he refers to the variety here, not the evenness of his kinfolk’s goolies. Saperavi, you see, a rarity from old Caucasian Georgia, has black juice, black skin, and black sap – the blackest thing you can grow for wine. It gives a black, perfumed, intense, beautifully balanced, smoothly tannic drink without all that Parkerilla alcohol! Beef Wellington, or steak and kidney pie. www.hughhamiltonwines.com.au (23.12.6)
